Cute, Viral… But Should Brands Be Using Kids as a Trend?
If you’ve been scrolling through Saudi and UAE brand accounts lately, you may have noticed something unusual: random kid selfies taking over corporate feeds.
What reportedly started as an accidental post quickly became a trend, with brands jumping in and turning an unexpected moment into a regional social media phenomenon.
It’s funny. It’s unexpected. It gets attention. But it also raises a question:
When does a harmless social media joke become the commercial use of children for engagement?
Why did it work?
Because it broke every rule of traditional branded content.
No polished production. No product placement. No carefully designed key visual. Just an imperfect selfie that immediately made people stop scrolling.
And once several brands joined in, the trend became bigger than any individual post.
From a marketing perspective, that’s brilliant real-time content. From an ethical perspective, it’s more complicated.
The part brands shouldn't ignore Children naturally attract attention and emotion, but a child cannot fully understand what it means for their image to be published by a major brand, potentially reaching millions of people.
Even with parental permission, brands should still consider privacy, digital footprints and whether a child’s image should become a marketing asset simply because a trend is performing.
And that leads to a bigger lesson for marketers:
Being culturally relevant doesn't mean participating in every cultural moment.
The Brighten Ads POV
At Brighten Ads, we believe brands should move fast, understand internet culture and leave room for spontaneous content.
But good real-time marketing also requires judgment.
The question shouldn't only be:
“Can we jump on this trend?”
It should also be:
“Should we?”
Because trends disappear quickly.
The content—and the digital footprint it creates—can last much longer.
What’s your take: brilliant real-time marketing or a line brands shouldn't cross?
